Evidence‑based, future‑ready mobility solutions
Modalis 360 helps municipalities and agencies make smarter, future‑ready mobility choices. Our specialties are multimodal transportation planning, transportation modelling and analytics, and travel demand forecasting—brought together in a 360° approach that links strategy, data, and delivery.
With more than 25 years of experience across Canada—from dense urban areas to rural contexts—we turn rigorous analysis into clear options for decision‑makers and stakeholders. We work by our core values: rigour in our methods, integrity in our advice, and recommendations supported by evidence. That means transparent assumptions, reproducible analyses, and results you can trust.
Our goal is to improve people’s mobility sustainably and resiliently so communities are ready for the future.
Data Collection
We design custom data collection campaigns tailored to the specific objectives and constraints of each mandate. Our services cover a wide range of techniques, including:
- Multimodal traffic counts (vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists) at intersections and along road segments.
- Transit passenger counts (boarding and alighting at stops).
- Mobility surveys conducted on-site or online, to better understand travel behaviour among individuals and/or freight operators.
- Origin-destination analyses using sensors, mobile traces, or GPS logs.
For each campaign, we establish a rigorous sampling strategy, ensure data quality control, and apply metadata standards that comply with confidentiality requirements. The result is a reliable, comprehensive database ready to support in-depth analysis or advanced transport modelling.
Multimodal Planning
We design integrated transportation networks that combine motorized modes, public transit, cycling, and walking, in harmony with land-use planning and public policy objectives. Our approach is guided by a simple principle: the right solution in the right place, to promote sustainable and context-sensitive mobility.
We assess current and future mobility needs through robust data and rigorous analyses, grounded in best practices and proven theoretical foundations. This process identifies the root causes of observed issues, anticipates emerging challenges, and proposes balanced solutions that account for technical, operational, and financial constraints.
The result is a coherent and realistic mobility plan, combining short-term feasibility with long-term resilience and performance.
Mobility Data Analytics
We transform mobility data into clear, relevant, and actionable insights. By combining multimodal counts, detailed origin-destination surveys, travel time records, and transit passenger counts to estimate network loading profiles across different times of day, we uncover the dynamics and trends that shape mobility - from congestion points to daily travel patterns.
Through rigorous and innovative analysis, we leverage data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to reveal insights that numbers alone cannot show. This approach enables the development of sustainable, efficient, and forward-looking solutions that address today’s needs while anticipating those of tomorrow.
Transportation Modelling (Meso / Micro)
Our team is proficient in the leading multimodal travel modelling software, at both mesoscopic and microscopic scales, including Dynameq, Aimsun, VISSIM, and Synchro.
Mesoscopic models are particularly effective for assessing the impacts of interventions or demand growth on mobility across large networks with multiple routing options, while microscopic models provide detailed analyses of traffic conditions along multimodal corridors, where capacity constraints can easily generate queues and significant delays.
We also have expertise in pedestrian flow modelling using Legion and Viswalk, for complex environments such as subway stations, train stations, and airports.
To ensure these models support decision-making effectively, calibration and validation is conducted with rigour, using accurate and representative data. Although this process can be demanding, it is a critical investment for ensuring credible results and sustainable performance.
Travel Demand Forecasting
We develop powerful, customized forecasting models to anticipate travel demand and transit ridership. With expertise in platforms such as OpenPaths EMME, and PTV VISUM, we turn mobility data into strategic decision-making tools.
Depending on project needs, we design models based on either the traditional four-step framework (trip generation, distribution, mode choice, and assignment) or advanced activity- and agent-based models capable of simulating the complete chain of daily household travel.
Combining technical rigour with practical insight, our experienced team delivers reliable and efficient models, aligned with investment value, local realities, and project constraints. The outcome: robust planning tools that enable informed decisions and help shape the mobility of tomorrow.
Business Case Development
Our team has extensive experience in preparing strategic and evidence-based business cases, grounded in comprehensive, multidisciplinary analysis. We manage every step of the process - from problem or opportunity definition to the evaluation of options and their economic, financial, environmental, and operational implications.
Our approach builds on a deep understanding of the interconnections between strategic planning, technical feasibility, socioeconomic value, and implementation capacity. Each business case provides decision-makers with a solid foundation to compare scenarios, prioritize investments, and optimize resource allocation.
With expertise in demand modelling, and strong knowledge of cost estimation, benefit analysis, and risk assessment, we can lead the delivery of transparent, coherent, and credible business cases that support informed, performance-driven, and sustainable decisions for communities.
